Boat Tours

Off the northwestern shores, a boat departs to the offshore Cayo Arena–also known as Cayo Paraíso. This area boasts some of the most abundant marine life in the DR, with corals and sponges that surround the key. Octopuses, crabs, schools of surgeon fishes, sergeant major fishes, angelfish, and yellowtail snappers, all swim around your feet. This tiny sandbank is also a dream spot to relax and take plenty of beach selfies.

This all-day tour starts with a 2-hour drive from La Curadiña to  the province of Monte Cristi. Afterwards, you’ll ride a boat for 25 minutes. The experience offers exceptional diving for beginners, starting at five meters (16 feet). Schools of tropical fish can also easily be seen in shallow turquoise waters, making this spot a paradise for snorkeling fans.

Kite surfing

Cabarete is known as one of the world’s best kitesurfing meccas, offering excellent surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Its constant trade winds and warm waters provide the perfect conditions for beginners and experts. For those interested in lessons, a wide variety of schools are located in Playa Cabarete, offering beginner and advanced level classes, as well as clinics.

Many pros of the world tour call Cabarete their home for 6 or more months of the year. 15 years ago, Cabarete was mostly known as the best place in the Caribbean for a windsurf holiday – then when kitesurfing became popular in the early 2000’s, it blossomed into a full surfing center.

Diving Marine life

A favorite of the area’s regular divers, and suitable for all levels of certification is the Airport Wall, considered one of the best and most beautiful dive sites in the DR. Located just 10 minutes by boat from Sosúa Bay. The wall dive begins at about 10 meters (33 feet) and drops to almost 30 meters (98 feet).

This is one of the richest sites in coral and marine life; covered with soft and hard corals and sea whips, where large and small fish find shelter in cracks and protrusions. Moving away from the wall, you’ll discover and explore more pinnacles and tunnels. Diving in Sosua is one of the top ten experiences travelers due to its crystal-clear waters.

For this half day tour a license is required. However, if you don´t have one, you can do some open water diving (in a pool) for a 2.5 hours practice, then you can dive into the sea for 1.5 hours.

Puerto Plata City

Puerto Plata, officially known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata, is the third-largest city in the Dominican Republic and home of two cruise ports, Amber Cove and Taino Bay, showcasing the city as one of the principal destinations in the Caribbean.

In the 16th century, the Spaniards built a key piece of Puerto Plata’s history, the Fortaleza de San Felipe, intent on defending the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Considered one of the most important Caribbean colonial military structures, it’s now a museum. Basking in the sunset at the foot of the fort, in La Puntilla park, is a must-do Puerto Plateño activity.

Puerto Plata also hosts the first Caribbean cable car, where visitors ride up 2600 feet to marvel at panoramic views of the city. This tour visits 7 popular attractions.
